Introduction
I am a History and Politics student at the University of Birmingham, preparing to enter my final year. I have always been driven by a passion for politics, especially international relations, which I pursue at degree level. Working in the public sector has always been extremely appealing to me, as I have always wanted to be at the centre of positive change and innovation. Therefore, when I found out that I would be working with the internal communications team in GDS, I was incredibly excited to work in the civil service. I was also nervous as I had little experience in event planning or communications, but I was quickly put at ease by the incredible team around me.
What I Learnt
I learnt first and foremost that communications and events are constantly changing and evolving to adapt to new circumstances, but that the team is always prepared and well equipped to adjust with amazing positivity. Working during an election period has been an incredibly eye-opening experience as it helped me realise how much work goes into the transition and how dedicated everybody is to make it as smooth as possible. I couldn’t be more grateful to be part of such an amazing team.
So far, I have learnt how to draft and publish comms posts, film and edit videos, organise staff events and chair meetings among other tasks. In addition, once my manager discovered my interest in international relations, I was introduced to the international team within GDS with whom I assisted in preparations for a Japanese delegation. I have felt my confidence rise monumentally in such a short space of time due to public speaking opportunities, and my abilities to use certain tech platforms have improved exponentially.
Conclusion
In the first month of my internship at GDS, I experienced what it is like to work in the Civil Service and gained skills that will undoubtedly prepare me for the Fast Stream and for life after University. I met amazing people and experienced an incredible working environment along with developing new skills. I have thoroughly enjoyed the first few weeks of my internship and I cannot wait to see what else is in store for me.
